Setting Up Message Settings

Your Messaging settings include your personal preferences regarding how communication from within Moodle is sent to you. By default, all Moodle messages are sent to your Moodle Messages tool.  You can choose to have those messages be sent to your personal email account as well as add additional notifications.

  1. To set your Message Settings, find the Settings block in your course (often on the left side).
  2. Click on the My profile settings link to display the drop-down list.
  3. Then click on Messaging.
  4. You will see a list of the type of notifications you can choose to receive--both with a logged in and an offline option.
  5. You should see a column labeled Popup notification. If you have a checkmark in that column, the notification on that row will be sent to the Moodle Messages tool.
  6. To the right of that column is an Email column. If you have a checkmark in that column, the notification in that row will be sent to your personal email account.
  7. You can check and uncheck boxes as desired. Don't check too many boxes, however, because then you will get so many messages that it will become difficult to pick out things that are more important.

You'll notice a few options that are set as Forced - this means that the site administrator has forced that option on (such as for Moodle Messages to go to the Messages tool). You cannot uncheck those items.

If you want to set your Moodle messages to also be sent to your personal email account:

  1. Scroll down to the Personal messages between users section.
  2. You have the option to checkmark both when you are logged in to Moodle or offline (not logged in to Moodle). It is recommended that you check both boxes if you want your Moodle messages forwarded.  This will forward all Moodle messages regardless of whether you are logged in to Moodle or not.
  3. After making changes, scroll down and click the Update profile button.  You should never check the boxes to temporarily disable notifications or to prevent non-contacts from messaging you. Doing so, could cause you to miss important information from your instructor.
