Respondus LockDown Browser Help

Respondus LockDown Browser is a locked browser for taking quizzes/exams in Moodle. It prevents you from printing, copying, going to another URL, or accessing other applications during a quiz. If a Moodle quiz requires that Respondus LockDown Browser be used, you will not be able to take the quiz with a standard web browser. Respondus LockDown Browser should only be used for taking Moodle quizzes. It should not be used in other areas of Moodle.

Installing LockDown Browser

If your instructor requires Respondus Lockdown Browser, you will be provided with that information and a link when you try to take the quiz in your normal Internet browser. The link will allow you to download the Respondus LockDown Browser software. The link is specific to Southeast Community College and is also provided below.

Taking Quizzes

  1. For any quiz/exam that requires Respondus LockDown Browser, first close all programs and windows.
  2. Then open the Respondus LockDown Browser. It should open to the SCC Moodle home page.
  3. You will have to click the Login link in the top-right corner of the Moodle web page and log in using your SCC username and password.
  4. Then click on the class for which you need to take the quiz/exam.
  5. Next, click the quiz/exam link in the course.

    • The LockDown Browser may ask you to close certain programs before starting if you didn't earlier.
    • You will not be able to exit the exam once you start.
    • You will need to finish and submit the exam before closing the browser window.
    • You cannot minimize the browser window, print, or navigate to othe web sites except those allowed by your instructor during the exam.
    • All applications are blocked.

Respondus Help

Respondus LockDown Browser works off of Intenet Explorer settings in the background for PCs (Safari for Macs). Internet Exporer (PCs) or Safari (Macs) must be installed and be set as the "default" browser for LockDown Browser to work properly.  You can use Firefox as your browser of choice, but you must set Internet Explorer as your default browser before attempting a LockDown Browser exam.  If you need to download Internet Explorer, see the Downloads link above.

Conflicts with other installed programs: When you place the Lockdown Browser on your personal or home computer, you may receive an error when trying to access quizzes. The error says that you still have a program open that needs to be closed before the Lockdown Browser will allow access. Some of the programs listed in the error are: Skype, IExplorer, or Firefox. These programs are actually closed but running in the background as a result of having Google Toolbars installed. Uninstalling Google Toolbars will get rid of the false error that the Lockdown browser produces and allow you to access quizzes and exams.

**Google Desktop is another application that will produce the same error and needs to be uninstalled in order for the Lockdown Browser to work.

Changing font size: If you want to adjust the font size while viewing your LockDown Browser page, do the following:

  1. Launch the LockDown Browser
  2. Click the Information-Settings icon in the upper left (the "i" button)
  3. Look for "Set Font Size"
  4. Choose the setting you'd prefer from the drop-down box and Apply
